School Begins Again...
I have crossed the half-way mark in my journey here. In some ways it seems like it has been MUCH longer but in others it seems like just a couple of months. I am looking forward to being back in the US and beginning a new journey/chapter in my life…who knows what He has in store for us. It is exciting! All of us foreign teachers are hoping to leave here the end of June…there is a possibility that we will not be able to leave until the end of July though. I’m hoping for June!!!!!
A lot has happened since I last posted a blog. Mom and Dad arrived on January 23, Dad left on February 5 and Mom left on February 22. While they were here we went to Beijing to see the sights! I arranged for us to go with a Chinese tour group, so we took a Chinese friend with us to translate. It was an interesting trip. We stayed in a not so nice hotel and ate really yucky food for five days. Other than that, we had a good time…but we FROZE!!! It was so cold! We visited The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, The Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, Mao’s Mausoleum (nothing like seeing an old dead man). We even got to ski for a little while…now we can say we have skied China…all there was to ski was three little bunny slopes. It was really funny. The Chinese would stand at the top, attempt to go down and roll all the way. They are crazy skiers…I was afraid to ski with them…they don’t watch where they are going and the just go whenever…they crash A LOT! We did a lot of other things there…I just can’t remember them all…I think my brain froze while we were there. It was an extremely busy five days. We were gone from about 7:30 each morning to 7:30 each night. Hopefully I will have some pictures to post in the next month. Mom is sending them to me.
Mom and Dad both got to visit “The Colony” and the “Big O”. The enjoyed it. We took blankets out to The Colony…they were very happy to receive them. Those are some of the happiest and most joyful people I have ever met. I love being around them!!! At the O mom and dad got to play with the little ones and feed them….they had a great time!
While both Mom and Dad were here we went wedding dress shopping in Guangzhou…a larger city in Guangdong province. They have a street with a lot of little bridal shops. After Dad left, Mom and I designed a wedding dress based on one that I tried on that we really liked. We took pictures and drawings to a seamstress and she was able to make me a dress. It was supposed to be finished before mom left but…it wasn’t finished until an hour after her plane left. :( She didn’t get to see it in person. There are a few minor changes I am going to have made but overall it is perfect! I am so excited! That is a memory we definitely won’t forget. Two Americans who know VERY little Chinese trying to tell a Chinese lady what we want for a wedding dress…luckily, there was a lady in the shop the same time as us who knew English and was able to translate for us. It really worked out great.
Mom and I just hung out for two weeks…she was hear during the main holiday time so everything was closed…it was really boring as far as that is concerned. We worked on a wedding list and just bummed around the cold apartment. When it was time for Mom to leave, things started opening back up again. Mom celebrated her 49th Birthday here. I made tacos for dinner and a chocolate pudding cake for dessert. I invited the other foreign teachers over for cake and ice cream. It was fun…I think it is a birthday Mom won’t forget…who gets to celebrate their birthday in China??? :)
School begins again on Monday…I’m looking forward to seeing the students and getting back into a routine. It is really lonely and boring here without them all around. Life is beginning to arrive back on the campus. It is nice!! I have been trying to plan my lessons for the term…I am almost finished. Thank goodness!!! I began taking an online class through SEBTS this last week. I watch DVD’s, read, and take a quiz each week…I’m really enjoying it and learning a lot…it will be good for me.
March 13-18 a group of five students and one leader will be coming from Liberty Univ. to work with me. I am very excited and looking forward to their coming. It will be a great treat to have them hear. Please “think” about their safe travel. I was hooked up with this group through a friend who was here the first time I came. I have asked them to talk to my classes about Easter…to tell them “everything” they know. Be “thinking” about this time that it might prove itself fruitful and rewarding.
